Curchorem Shelter

When we vacated our old shelter at Sonsoddo (which many of you will remember) we moved to our new centre - GAWT Animal Care Centre and Boarding Kennels - at Curchorem, in the former police station.  Curchorem is about 15km east of Margao.

The Curchorem shelter is fully equipped to implement the ABC (Animal Birth Control) programme with an operating theatre and can provide pet vaccinations, operations, outpatient treatment, pet supplies and adoptions of puppies and adult dogs. A qualified Veterinary Surgeon and fully trained staff are on site. There is a residential Hospital Unit for pet dogs requiring medical supervision for short or long stay. Any necessary medical and surgical requirements are at hand.

Within the shelter, there are several dog / cat holding areas, pre- and post-operation areas, a dedicated kitchen for food preparation, an operating theatre plus a reception and office. There are also mobile / collapsible cages which can be used as necessary for kittens and puppies.

Before the 2010 monsoon season we installed ceiling fans throughout the Curchorem shelter, a move which was particularly appreciated by staff and animals because the monsoon was particularly hot and humid.  Much of the cost of this work was paid for by donations from Friends and supporters.

News

In August 2010 we were called out to a particularly bad case of cruelty towards stray dogs on the beach at Varca. Both local people and visitors were up in arms about the treatment these dogs and their received and called us to help. One of the visitors had been taking a video of three of the dogs with their new litters, and she sent us in a video, which subsequently went up on Facebook and caused much debate.

Unfortunately we were able to save only one of the mothers, and three pups from  another litter.  The mother is recovering well at our Curchorem Centre. Meanwhile  the pups are growing fast and are full of fun. They will soon go to one of our puppy adoption camps and hopefully we will find them good homes.

Boarding Kennels

The ‘Home and Away’ Boarding Kennels are also located at Curchorem. The kennels have individual units, and security and care are the two prime factors of this project. Owners can be assured that their pets will be well looked after in their absence.

Don't worry - it's more comfortable than it looks!
