Obituary - Brownie Many people coming to Colva in Goa will have at least stopped to pass the time of day with Brownie, who sat outside and inside Goodman’s Restaurant for almost 12 years. He was characterised by a very gentle nature and he had seemingly a smile always on his face. (His two bottom incisors grew up just outside his upper mouth, giving him the appearance of gently grinning whenever he looked at you). Charles and Turid, his owners, found him in the Margao fruit and fish market being abused by the locals, and brought him back to Goodman’s. Charles reckons he was just a few months old at that time. He loved walking on the beach and I spent many a pleasant hour being stalked by him as I walked to Benaulim and back in the early morning. Last year Brownie was immortalised in a painting by John Mountford, a frequent visitor to Goodman’s from Wales. This was then signed by Brownie’s many admirers and auctioned at one of our events, raising just under Rs.5,000/- for GAWT. The picture now hangs in a prominent position in Goodman’s. Brownie was killed (instantly) by a motorbike just outside the restaurant on 21st June last. He will be a much-missed landmark. Charles and Turid are waiting to adopt another dog from the Shelter.

Court Bans Feeding of Stray Dogs GAWT volunteers have always kept an eye on the beach dogs during the monsoon months, treating their mange and, above all, feeding them several times a week. We heard with great regret that a recent judgement in the Bombay High Court has banned the practice of feeding any stray dogs . For further details click on Bombay High Court Judgement. Feeding the beach dogs during the monsoon kept them from becoming ill and wandering inland looking for food. |
St. Patrick’s Night Celebrations A successful St Patrick’s Day celebration took place on 17th March, 2008 at Casa Susegad in Lutolim, owned by Carole and Norman Steen. Great food cooked by Carole and music for all tastes. The event raised some Rs. 32,500/- for GAWT. Thanks to everyone who attended.

Guinness at the Tate Earlier this year Anthony David (known to one and all as Toff), owner of Tate Restaurant, Colva, raised Rs. 7000/- for us by raffling four large cans of Guinness in the restaurant. Guinness is not in great supply here so business was brisk! If you want to meet members of GAWT they gather in Tate Restaurant, Colva, most Wednesday evenings for a drink and meal.
Toff (centre) hands the money to Charmian, watched by Colin “B” We are always very grateful for the many donations we receive, and the willingness of people to raise funds for our work.
